Westinghouse Ceiling Fan FAQs
FAQ
WHAT SIZE FAN SHOULD I CHOOSE FOR MY ROOM ?
76cm/30" blade size for rooms upto 10sq mtrs
105cm/42" blade size for rooms upto 15 sq mtrs
132cm/52" blade size for rooms upto 25 sq mtrs

HOW DO I CHOOSE THE CORRECT DROP ROD LENGTH ?
For optimum air circulation it is most effective to have the blades 2.4m-2.7m above the floor, most fans are supplied with a 4"/100mm drop rod (except the contempra trio). So if your new fan is being installed into a conservatory with an apex roof you shall require a longer drop rod. The longer rods are available in 2 different sizes 12"and 18" and there are 10 different finishes, most people choose the drop rod to match the fan finish, but the mix and match approach can be effective too. All longer rods are supplied with a longer wiring lead as standard.

HOW DOES A CEILING FAN COOL OR WARM A ROOM ?
Ceiling fans can make a room feel 8 degrees cooler by creating a "wind chil" effect - it does not actually lower the temperature of the room, but instead makes you feel cooler by accelerating the evaporation on your skin. Likewise running one of our fans in reverse you can redistribute the hot air that rises to the ceiling that becomes trapped - thus making the temperature of the room feel warmer.

WHICH DIRECTION SHOULD MY FAN GO FOR WINTER OR SUMMER ?
Clockwise for winter and counter-clockwise for summer.

HOW CAN I EXPECT TO SAVE ON HEATING/COOLING COSTS BY USING A CEILING FAN ?
A ceiling fan can provide all year round savings. In summer you can save upto 30% on air conditioning, making the room feel cooler. In winter you can save upto 10% on heating costs by reclaiming the hot air trapped near to your ceiling by running your fan in reverse. Savings will vary based on local climate conditions and energy rates.

WHAT IS COVERED BY YOUR FAN WARRANTY ?
Westinghouse are so confident in the quality of their motors that they offer a 10 year warranty.

WHY SHOULD I CONSIDER A REMOTE CONTROL UNIT ?
Remote control units are very useful in high installations ie conservatories, they are also useful if you have limited access to a ceiling fan, also from the remote you can dim your light kit.

HOW MANY FANS WILL MY WALL CONTROLLER OPERATE ?
A wall controller can control upto 4 ceiling fans, but if your wall controller has a light switch, we only advise 1 ceiling fan per controller.

WHY IS THE REVERSE SWITCH ABOVE THE BLADES ?
The reason is because if a ceiling fan was running at the highest setting and then the reverse switch was switched it would cause damage to the motor, so having the switch above the blades makes sure that the blades are static when the reverse switch is used. This is the single reason why we don't supply a wall or remote reversing unit.

WHAT IF MY FAN IS WOBBLING ?
you can purchase a simple fan balancing kit from one of our stockist.

Part 1: General inquiries
1. What size fan do I require for my room? 76 cm/30" blade size for rooms up to 10 sq meters
105 cm/42" blade size for rooms up to 15 sq meters
132 cm/52" blade size for rooms up to 25 sq meters

Larger rooms may require two or more fans so that you get the optimal use from your fan.

2. Can I buy a ceiling fan in a finish or colour other than what is pictured in the catalogue? No, only what is pictured on the website or in the catalogue is offered. b

3. Can I buy only the blades for a ceiling fan? No, we do not sell blades separately.

4. What direction should my fan rotate in the winter/summer? Clockwise in the winter and counterclockwise in the summer. On the winter setting, it circulates warm air that is trapped on the ceiling. On the summer setting it makes it feel up to eight degrees.

5. My fan is operating very slowly why is this? A faulty capacitor may cause your ceiling fan to run slowly. There are three screws that hold the light kit or housing cap to the bottom of the fan. Remove these screws and take the light kit or housing cap off. Inside the switch housing you will see a small black plastic rectangular box this will be approximately 1 " in size. This is your capacitor. Write down the color of the wires coming out of the top. On the side of the capacitor, there is a series of numbers followed by the letters "uf". Call customer service with this information and we will replace this for you.

6. My fan wobbles, how can I get it to stop? Fan blades are made of manmade products and sometimes there is a difference in the weights of the blades. This can sometimes cause your fan to wobble. Also make sure that the mounting bracket is attached securely to the ceiling; the canopy is attached securely to the mounting bracket and the ball on the down rod should fit securely into the ball holder (there is a little flange on the ball that will seat the ball into the ball holder).

Make sure that the blades are securely attached to the motor; check the screws that hold the blades to the blade holder to make sure that they are tightened securely. Then measure the tip of the blade to the ceiling, all of the blades should measure within 1 cm difference in this measurement to the ceiling. This can be adjusted by holding one hand on the blade and the other on the motor and gently move it to the desired distance. If you still have a problem, call customer service.

7. Is it possible as end user to order directly from Westinghouse Lighting? No, this is not possible. If you are interested we will inform you where there is a retailer/store is in your city.

8. What is covered under my warranty? We are so confident in the quality of Westinghouse ceiling fans that each fan is backed by either a 25 year or a 10 year limited warranty. For the first two years (EU consumer law) you should go back to your distributor if there is a problem with your fan, this excludes light bulbs issues and damage done by misuse. After the two years, only the motor is covered by the limited warranty.

Part 2: Installation of a ceiling fan
1. Can I install this fan myself? Yes, you can. Our easy to follow manual will guide you through the steps of installation. Installation times vary with the fan that you choose. Select Westinghouse Lighting fans with the patented InstaLoc technology, which makes the fan very easy to install since there are less parts to put together. Almost all of the parts are preassembled with only 15 major parts whereas most other fans have at least 60 parts to assemble.

2. My conservatory has a very steep roof, what is the maximum slope to which I can install the fan? 40° is the maximum slope that you can install the ceiling fan. You must make sure that the fan is at least a 6” away from the slope or any other obstructions in the room.

3. What if my remote control doesn't work after installing it? If your remote controlled fan doesn't work after it has been installed, first check to make sure that power is going to the infrared unit and that the batteries in the handheld are charged. Make sure that the pull chain for the fan speed is at its highest setting and the light kit is on. One frequent mistake during installation is that the connections on the infrared device get clipped together. One connection goes to the fan and the other to the light, if they are clipped together the power will not work.

4. How to balance a ceiling fan If your ceiling fan blades are not balanced the fan may start to wobble then the fan motor will be working harder than it should causing excess ware on the motor. To work properly the fan blades need to be balanced properly and securely fastened. The first step is to tighten all the screws that secure the blade to the housing. Next secure all the screws that secure the down rod to the ceiling and to the housing.
If the blades are not balanced properly, the weight will be uneven causing the fan to shift back and forth. You can try to balance the blades yourself by using the balance kit included with your fan or ordering it through your manufacturer, you can also try a coin and some tape. Start by securing a small weight to the top of the blade, then turn the fan on and see if it balances out, if not, keep moving the weight around. This may take some time, patience and a little trial and error until you get it balanced correctly. Also carefully examine each blade to see if there are any marks, gauges or any other damage. If there is obvious damage, simply replace the blade. If the style of blade you want to replace is discontinued you may have to replace all the ceiling fan blades.
Warped ceiling fan blades can also cause the fan to wobble. To help determine if they are warped, remove all the blades and lay them on a flat surface one on top of the other and look to see if there are any uneven gaps. Unfortunately if one or more blades are warped there is not much you can do to fix them. You will need to replace the warped blade with the same make and style, if the blade style you require is discontinued you should replace all the fan blades.

5. Ceiling fan noise Ceiling fan noise can sometimes be difficult to pinpoint but in most cases you can find and eliminate the noise in just a few steps. New fans often produce a humming noise, which in most cases can be resolved by running the fan, when the fan is running the bearings will automatically be lubricated. Try running the fan for 12 to 24 hours, this should help thoroughly lubricate the bearings and stop the humming noise.

Loose parts such as blades or light fixtures can also generate ceiling fan noise. Tightening the screws on the blades or light shades is a good place to start when trying to eliminate the fan noise. If the noise continues, try inserting a small piece of rubber or similar material between the blades and screws or between the light shades and screws. This will absorb the noise and cause a tighter fit holding the parts securely in place. If the noise persists, you can always check with your manufacturer for more information.

To help eliminate ceiling fan noise and to prevent excess wear on the motor, we recommend that you tighten all visible screws and bolts and visually inspect your ceiling fan for any signs of wear on a monthly basis.

Part 3: Questions about accessories
1. Can I use a wall switch and a remote control on my fan? No, you cannot use both; it must be one or the other.

2. Is it possible to use a remote control on any fan? You can use a remote control on nearly any fan except on “hugger” fans. These require the 78095 remote control.

3. How do I reset my remote control? Turn the fan onto the highest setting and switch the light kit on (both via the pull chains). Allow the fan to run for approximately one minute, then turn the fan off completely for about one minute. Turn the power back on and press 1 on the remote control hand unit.

4. What is the fuse size in the 78949 remote control? 3.15 amp

5. How many fans will my wall controller operate? A wall controller can control up to five ceiling fans if they are wired sequentially. If your wall controller has a light switch, we advise using one ceiling fan per controller, because of the increased wattage/load on the controller.

6. What wiring do I need for a wall controller? A wall controller with a light switch requires 3-core wiring. The controller that controls only the fan speed requires 2-core wiring.

7. Can I cut the down rod by myself? No, you can't cut the fan`s down rod. Our down rods come in two different sizes; 12”(30,5 cm) and 18”(46 cm).

8. Can I use a dimmer for controlling the fan`s speed? No you can`t use a dimmer to control the fan`s speed. To dim the light use a remote control.
