Mildew and black mould growth are classic symptoms of condensation. In order to extract warm, moist air from the bathroom and prevent condensation occurring, the room also needs heating in spite of any ventilation. A solution is a permanent, low wattage electric towel rail. These range from 70W to 300W which means they use only as much electricity as two or three light bulbs and the running costs should be more than compensated for by savings in repairs and redecoration.
Even better would be a dehumidifier, again left permanently running. A dehumidifier has the advantage of warming the room as well as extracting moisture from the air. It is important it is kept running permanently, in order to prevent condensation occurring during the cold night periods.
